Author of Two Books, including “Politics is for Power”
USY International President, 2001
USY taught me about grassroots leadership. I am a political scientist who studies the power of local organizing and getting off the sidelines and making real change, principles I first learned in USY. From chapters to regions, USYers lead the way. They get amazing mentorship from adults. But even more than that, they really get to put their ideas into action, and experience the ups and downs (mostly ups!) of organizing.
USY also made me understand the power and meaning of tefillah. In so many synagogues, prayer is lethargic and boring, but USY was the first place where I saw what prayer could be.
And USY gave me a new understanding of our country and the world. I spent four summers with USY, one on USY Israel Pilgrimage, and three on staff in Europe and the US. USY Summer Programs were so good that I still look back on them as the best summer I’ve ever had.
USY empowers thousands of Jewish teenagers to create exceptional Jewish experiences, yet it can do so much more. Please consider making a contribution to USY’s annual campaign to ensure that USY has the resources to operate, staff, and expand it’s programs throughout the Jewish world.
