A Note from Ambassador Oren:
Shalom,
I’m delighted and honored to be congratulating USY on its 70th birthday.
USY had a profound and transformative role in my life and in my Jewish and Zionist identity.
I was an active member of the West Orange Jewish Center (now B’nai Shalom) chapter and an officer in the HaGalil region. I took part in numerous conventions and other special events, including rallies for Israel and for the freedom of Soviet Jewry. Imbued with the deep sense of Jewish peoplehood instilled in me by USY, I visited Israel several times before finally making aliya in 1979.
Since then, I have served in the IDF (paratroopers, lone soldier, reaching the rank of major), as an advisor to Israel’s delegation to the UN and to Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, as Israel’s ambassador to the United States (2009 to 2013), and a Member of Knesset and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office (2015-2019). I have taught history at several Israeli and American universities and published books on Israeli and Middle East history. I have three children and five grandchildren, all living in Israel.
